The 5-Step Sensory Anchor

"True healing requires courage, clarity, and emotional balance."

How do I change my "scary" thoughts during a panic attack?

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we look at the "catastrophic misinterpretation" of bodily sensations. When your heart races, your brain says, "I'm having a heart attack." My recommendation for anyone starting this journey is to refit the narrative.

Instead of saying, "I am dying," try the ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) approach of "noticing." Tell yourself: "I am noticing the thought that I am in danger, but I know this is just my body's alarm system working too hard." This process of acknowledging the sensation without identifying with it is transformative. According to the Mayo Clinic, recognizing that these symptoms are not life-threatening is a critical step in reducing the frequency of attacks.

For our military families and veterans in Honolulu, this reframing is especially powerful when dealing with transitional stressors. It allows you to separate past triggers from the present safety of your home.

Can online therapy actually help with panic?

Many of my clients in Hawaii and those living as expats internationally wonder if they need to be in a room with a therapist to find relief. The reality is that online therapy is highly effective for panic disorders because we can practice these grounding tools in the very environment where your anxiety usually triggers, your home or office.

We provide specialized online sessions for residents in Hawaii, Texas, New Mexico, and Nevada. For those outside these states or the U.S., our coaching services offer a way to move forward with peace and clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a panic attack actually hurt me physically?
While it feels like a medical emergency, a panic attack itself is not dangerous. It is a temporary surge of adrenaline. However, if you experience new or severe chest pain, it is always wise to consult a medical professional to rule out other issues.

How long does the average panic attack last?
Most panic attacks peak within 10 minutes and then begin to subside. Using the 5-minute framework of breathing and grounding can significantly shorten the "tail" of the attack and lower its intensity.

What if these techniques don't work for me?
Grounding is a "flexible practice." If one tool doesn't work, we try another. For some, deep-dive educational work or structured CBT with a therapist is necessary to address the underlying triggers.
